Externship Opportunities at Adobe Veterinary Center

Here at Adobe Veterinary Center, we love to teach eager and friendly veterinary students.

*Please note that as of August 2026, large animal rotations are extremely limited.

Small Animal Service

Our small animal service has 5 vets and sees 15% cats and 85% dogs.

Large Animal Service

Our large animal service has 5 vets and sees 70% of our patients in the field and 30% in the clinic.
The large animal species breakdown is:
  • 75% equine
  • 10% caprine
  • 10% porcine (mostly potbellied pigs)
  • The remaining 5% is mixed between bovine, ovine and camelids.

Externship Options

  • Large animal: 2–4 weeks
  • Small animal: 2–4 weeks
  • Mixed animal (divided between large and small): 2–4 weeks

On day one, there will be an orientation and each student and supervising veterinarian will establish a “learning contract” where goals are discussed, agreed upon and written down.

Time Expectations

  • 5 days per week (usually M–F), 35–40 hours per week
  • After-hours large animal emergencies will be optional for the student.

Experiences the Student Can Expect

  • Gathering histories
  • Doing physical exams on a variety of species
  • Discussing rule outs and treatment options with veterinarians
  • Assisting with surgeries and procedures with veterinarians
  • Performing and interpreting radiographs and ultrasounds with veterinarians
  • Assisting with dental work
  • Performing skills like placing catheters, giving injections, skin scrapes, aspirations etc.
  • Participating in a mock code situation

Our Guidelines

  • We expect you to be actively learning while at Adobe Veterinary Center to allow you to get the best out of your time here.
  • Must be currently enrolled in Veterinary School.
  • You must carry your own professional liability insurance either through your school or through the AVMA. Proof of insurance is required.
  • Handling animals is up the veterinarian. You will be involved as is appropriate, but hands-on is not guaranteed.
  • If you are externing with the large animal veterinarians, expect to be in the field all day. Bring water to drink and pack lunch. Also come prepared for the different weather conditions (hot or cold).
  • You will be required to sign a waiver.
    Pictures are not permitted at any time.
  • In the event of an emergency, we do ask that you stand back out of the way
  • Stand back when watching our veterinarians work. Anything can happen during an exam and they need space to react.
  • No questions in front of the clients. The doctor’s will be happy to answer questions after the appointment is completed.
  • If large animal is slow we expect students to jump in and work with the small animal veterinarians and vice versa. Winter is normally slower for large animal.
  • As a veterinary student you are expected to arrive first thing in the morning and stay until everything has been completed. Approximately 7:30am-6pm. We are open for regular appointments Monday-Saturday 8am-5pm.
  • Come prepared! We expect you to look ahead at the appointment schedule and come prepared for appointments and surgeries.
  • Attire: Small Animal: Business casual or scrub top with nice dark jeans or khaki pants and closed toed shoes. Large Animal: Clean scrub top/polo shirt, nice clean jeans, and closed toed shoes/boots.

Ideal Student Profile

The ideal student would be one that…
  • Is not sure what they want to do after graduation.
  • Is going to work small animal in a rural area where they may see the occasional farm animal.
  • Wants to see the collaborative benefit of a mixed animal practice.
  • Wants to work in a mixed animal practice.
  • Wants some exposure to species that they are not familiar with.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in the final year of Veterinary School.
  • Must carry your own professional liability insurance either through your school or through the AVMA. Proof of insurance is required.
